A Vertical Jungle Trek Up Maderas Volcano
Hikers recount tales of the muddy trek up Maderas Volcano but you don't quite understand the extent of the mud until you are in it, hanging onto a tree root to keep from falling down the vertical rainforest that is the "trail". The terrain changes from dirt to mud to swamp the higher you climb and offers few glimpses of the land below, making the panoramic view from the narrow clearing at the summit even more rewarding. Clouds often cover the volcano but with luck, you'll have a panoramic pop-up-book view of the island including smoking Concepcion Volcano on one side, and the lush Maderas crater lake on the other. Don't get too comfortable, you still need to make your way down before sunset!
