When you are in Lisbon
in the winter or fall, don't miss the castanhas assados
or roasted chestnuts. They are roasted in small ovens right on the street corners and Rua Garret is an ideal spot. Usually chestnuts are roasted from October to February but you can get them in mid-September in many instances. They are split, salted, and roasted. You purchase them by the dozen in small paper sacks. There is nothing better than a beer and a bag of roasted chestnuts hot from the roaster. They are creamy and salty, and so delicious. By the way, fairly nutritious, too. Just buy a drink at a kiosk on the Avenida Liberdade and sit down and enjoy while you people watch. Something not to miss while in Lisbon toward fall.
