Katong is an ethnically rich neighborhood on Singapore's east coast, where Peranakan roots run deep. (The Peranakan culture sprang from the intermarriage of Chinese tradesmen and local Malay women centuries ago.) Increasingly, new eateries and bars are appearing between the kopitiam (local "coffee shops" that serve tasty and fresh hawker dishes) and antiques dealers in the shophouses that line East Coast Road. Rabbit Carrot Gun is one example. With just a few impeccably curated rooms and a popular restaurant downstairs, RCG is a great choice if you want to base yourself in this vibrant neighborhood that is slightly off the beaten path but still close to downtown.
