Amid pine trees, swamps, curling oak trees, and Muscatine grapevines, stride through Davy Crockett National Forest, located 20 miles east of Crockett, on Texas Highway 7. A protected area that contains more than 150,000 acres of East Texas woodland habitat, the forest teems with streams and recreation areas. The Four C National Hiking trail follows an abandoned tram track, once utilized by the Central Coal and Coke Company. It leads hikers for 20 verdant miles (one way), beginning at Ratcliff Lake and ending at the Neches Bluff Overlook. Avoid this trail during hunting season, and be aware that summer heat can be oppressive.
