Jazz history with a side of southern fare
To locals the area south of Geary Avenue is simply called the Fillmore, though officially it's the Historic Fillmore Jazz Preservation District, and at its revitalized heart is 1300 on Fillmore, lovingly helmed by chef David Lawrence and his wife Monetta White. Opened in 2007, the restaurant sits at what was the sizzling epicenter of African American music during the 1950s, and pays homage to the neighborhood's cultural history. Start with a drink in the Heritage Lounge, where an eye-catching collage of framed and back lit black-and-white photos shows off the performers who once frequented the Fillmore, then move on to dinner. David’s classic training and refined southern taste bring an updated edge to old-fashioned southern food with a menu of irresistible bites such as crispy fried chicken, barbecue shrimp and creamy grits, and a bourbon mac n’ cheese so good you’ll want to sing. But save that for the famous 1300 on Fillmore Sunday Gospel Brunch where music and history nourish your soul as deeply as a plate of bananas foster French toast and cinnamon dusted beignets.
