Charming beach town near Rome
During our trip to Rome, we decided to check out the town of Sperlonga, located about 60 miles south of the city. Speckled with white-washed buildings reminiscent of the Greek Isles, we found an escape from the city in this charming little town. Once an ancient Roman resort, Sperlonga is now a laid-back, fun vacation spot. A secret to international tourists, we were fortunate to share in it's splendor with locals and Italian tourists. The water is relatively clear and warm. Swimming is effortless with very gentle current and a very gradual descent into the water. You can walk out for quite a distance still feeling the smooth sand under your feet. People were very friendly and the atmosphere is care-free. Walking through the town and up into the winding tiny streets is a must if you want to truly experience the entirety of this gorgeous place. It was the perfect quick get-away to prepare for more sight-seeing in the big city.
