Oaxaca is world renowned for its culinary derring-do—the varieties of corn alone, combined into endless varieties of delicacies, can stun a traveler into happy submission. But soldier through it, brave travelers, and make your way to the village of Teotitlan del Valle.

The village, outside Oaxaca City, is known as one of the region’s ancient handicraft villages, in particular for its artisanal weaving families. But it’s also a pilgrimage spot for those seeking handcrafted Mexican food, thanks to Tlamanalli, the family restaurant of Abigail Mendoza Ruiz. Paula Froelich, the personality behind Yahoo Travel’s A Broad Abroad, recently visited Teotitlan del Valle, and learned some serious tlayuda-making skills.
