The best of what to do in and around Los Angeles this week

This week in L.A., pump up your winter holiday celebrations with a dose of Lucent Dossier Experience. Get an adrenaline rush from a midnight showing of Bonnie and Clyde, or relax under the lights at the always popular L.A. Zoo Lights event. Then stop by the Four Season’s Vinoteca for a special Italian holiday treat. And to get out of town, Los Padres National Forest offers a great escape.

AFAR Local is our weekly insider guide to the best of what’s happening in cities around the U.S.

September 20 | Now open: Restaurant
A café during the day and a cocktail bar at night, Vinoteca does strong Italian coffee and Bloody Marys equally well. Order freshly made panettone, which is available exclusively for the holidays. Executive pastry chef Frederico Fernandez uses a natural yeast starter and flour imported from Italy to make the sweet bread.

L.A. Zoo Lights
The L.A. Zoo’s nightly holiday light show is legendary in the city. Once the sun sets, the zoo transforms into a 1,000-watt winter wonderland of twinkling string lights, 3-D projections, and illuminated water displays. Giant Technicolor versions of animals, including an origami rhino and a glowing snake, nod to their real-life counterparts. There will also be live reindeer in attendance, and plenty of hot cocoa and holiday treats to go around.

Tis the Season with Lucent Dossier Experience

Part electronic rock band, part avant-garde circus, the performance group will bring whimsical characters and original story lines to the outdoor plaza, which will be decked out for the holidays. In the spirit of giving back, the organizers of this free event request that participants bring new toys, blankets, and art supplies to donate to Volunteers of America Los Angeles.
