In the last issue I mentioned that we were thinking of holding an event in Egypt this fall. We received such a great initial response that we’ve decided to invite 50 people to join AFAR for an extraordinary three-day experience in Cairo in October 2011. We will meet fascinating Egyptians: a young leader of the revolution, a famed archaeologist, an innovative architect, an up-and-coming chef, a Muslim religious leader. We’ll also talk to contemporary artists, musicians, and other influential members of Egypt’s business, political, and education communities. These are the people of Egypt who are effecting change in their country. By connecting with locals whom we would never get to meet otherwise, we will come away with a deep understanding of what is going on in Egypt today.

We will gather in distinctive places all over Cairo, including some that aren’t open to the general public. One night, local families will host us in their homes for dinner. Another evening, we will immerse ourselves in Egyptian cuisine, music, storytelling, and art. Throughout the event, we will celebrate the beauty and mystique of the country, and, most important, we will have fun.

We think many of you will want to join us, but space is limited—just 50 spots. We would like the group to be diverse: a cross-section of the AFAR community, curious individuals with different careers and backgrounds, from various places. Being part of our group, brought together with a lineup of inspiring Egyptians, will be an unparalleled experience. Indicating your interest early will give you the best chance to be one of the founding participants in AFAR Experiences, the first of what we hope will be semiannual events hosted around the world.

The cost is $3,500, excluding hotel and air. We will be arranging special hotel and airline discounts. In addition, we are working with some of our travel partners, such as Abercrombie & Kent and Cox & Kings, to offer unique post-event trips in Egypt designed especially for attendees. We are confident that, after three days in Cairo, our group will be excited and prepared to go out and explore Egypt as never before, equipped with a new understanding of the country, its people, and its culture.

The AFAR Experiences trip will take place October 25 through 27. If you are eager to join the AFAR team, please email me at or visit to learn more about the application process.

I hope to see you in Cairo for what will no doubt be a once-in-a-lifetime trip.

Good travels,

Greg Sullivan
