The annual Greek Festival at St. George Greek Orthodox Church is not to be missed. Go early to get in line for a variety of Greek pastries, and then grab some lunch at one of the many tents. Watch the lamb cook on the rotisserie while you wait in line for souvlaki or gyros. Other Greek dishes are available in the church basement. Stick around throughout the afternoon for music and dancing.
At Independence Hall in Philadelphia, the park rangers tell you that you will get goose bumps standing in the room where the Continental Congress met and the Declaration of Independence was signed. They aren't kidding. If you aren't able to get a ticket to tour Independence Hall during the day, don't worry! From 5-7pm, you can line up for the opportunity to do a quick 15-minute tour of the Hall without a ticket.
"Wonderland" truly lives up to it's name in the wintertime. The snow and frigid temperatures in Yellowstone in February make for some spectacular views. Steam rises from all the thermal features, and wildlife are easily spotted against the white background.
When you are in Glacier National Park, go for a ride on one of the famous red buses. The views along the Going-To-The-Sun Road are spectacular, and much easier to enjoy when someone else is doing the driving.
The Grand Canyon Railway takes you from Williams, AZ, up to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. You detrain at the Grand Canyon Depot, which is just down the hill from El Tovar Hotel, and a short walk to the rim.
Nara is home to a small breed of deer that wander freely around the city, but they tend to congregate around Todai-ji, waiting for someone to feed them. You can buy sembe (a type of cracker) for the deer at one of the many stalls set up along the roads & sidewalks. The deer will come up and eat right out of your hand!
If you're ever in Mystic, going to Mystic Pizza is a must. The dining area has expanded quite a bit since the 80's, but the pizza is always great.
The deck of the schooner Mystic Whaler provides excellent opportunities for sightseeing along the New England coast. The waterfront of Stonington, CT, was particularly picturesque after a day of traveling through fog.
The Southeast Light on Block Island boasts a first-order Fresnel lens. For a reasonable amount, you can take a tour to the top of the lighthouse. On a clear day, the view is great!
A cruise aboard the Mystic Whaler is a great way to get away from it all. Go on one of their multi-day cruises to see the sights and learn some of the history of New England.
The Kaymoor Trail takes you down in to the New River Gorge to view the remnants of the old Kaymoor mine. Part-way down the gorge, you come to the shelf level with the mine entrances. From there, a very long, winding stairway takes you to the floor of the gorge.
A walk at twilight through Castelló d'Empúries is a nice way to see the city. The last rays of the sun and the electric lights of the city moat illuminate the Basilica of Santa Maria.
The mineral waters are always flowing at Berkeley Springs State Park. Wading through the water is a good way to spend a couple of hours on a hot summer day.
