“Collective effervescence” is experienced at the best of festivals where people find their connection to something bigger. Thaipusam is a Hindu festival in which devotees walk barefoot from Kuala Lumpur to the Batu Caves carrying decorated wooden frames called kavadi that pierce their bodies. It's a reminder that we can transcend our earthly obstacles through discipline and devotion, through belief in powers beyond ourselves, and through the universal love of family and friends.
