Now there is a new reason to visit Modena, the mother city of supercars in northern Italy. An inspiring museum for Enzo Ferrari has just opened. Enzo Ferrari was an Italian icon, a real genius that created the absolute myth in Formula 1 and the most valuable brand in automotive industry. Last March, the new Museo Casa Enzo Ferrari was inaugurated to become the new hotspot in the so called Motor Valley of Modena. The museum was built next to the house where Enzo Ferrari was born. The house was neglected for years till an Italian journalist discovered it. It still belongs to a wealthy Italian family and up to some years ago it was used as a garage. On the outside, the historic building was restored to its original state. Inside it was transformed to an interactive museum that tells Ferrari’s story through his personal archive and memorabilia, pictures and video material. The first Ferrari in history – the iconic 125 Sport is the only car in the museum. Next to Ferrari’s house, an ultra modern structure of aluminium and glass was built. Outside, the roof recalls the curved hood of a racing car and is painted in the trademark yellow of Modena and Ferrari’s logo. Inside, the futuristic design of Czech architect, late Jan Kaplicky is an open space with no pillars, naturally lit. The first exhibition is a collection of vintage racing Alfa Romeo’s the cars the Ferrari drove himself or developed for racing.
In the region of Emilia-Romagna, eat at Massimo Bottura’s three-Michelin-star Osteria Francescana. From there, take a day trip to Massimo Spigaroli’s farm estate, Antica Corte Pallavicina; visit his charcuterie, and buy some culatello [a prized salumi] and sausages to take back home. In some ways, the Mercato Albinelli in Modena, Italy is less like a covered market and more like a gallery showcasing fine art. One artist exhibits his prize, plump strawberries; another her handmade golden tortelloni; while another puts the finishing touches on links of sausage. During our shopping missions at this fresh market in Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region so renowned for its Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese, traditional balsamic vinegar, and Ferraris and Maserati motors, everyone seemed to be plain cheery. Bakers dished out free samples of thick, braided breadsticks to hungry children. Merchants’ wide, genuine smiles squished their faces in such a fashion that their eyes were nearly concealed. And a wooly, brown and white dog even took time to smell the flowers. We left with picnic fare: fat strawberries, gluten-free bread, and Pepato (Sicilian cheese made with sheep milk and studded with peppercorns). November 2011 ::: Meeting Alessandro Martini for the first time at 7.30 in the morning is like having a double espresso, twice in one go. He is as animated and bright as his jacket (in the photos). Only one other guest, an American lady by the name of Nancy (I think) nearly out-talked him on the trip. Alessandro runs the top-rated to-do activity in Bologna, the food capital of the italian world. Alessandro not only runs the best tour in town, but is extremely passionate about good, healthy food and traditional ways of preparing food. As part of the tour, you will be brought to visit a family factory that for over 3 generations has been committed to the production of the famous “Prosciutto di Modena D.O.P.” (known for it's natural sweetness)
We'll never look at 'Parmesan Cheese' in the same way again following a visit to the Hombre Cheese Farm, outside of Modena, Italy where authentic Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese is made. Each one of these organic wheels of cheese weighs approximately 80 pounds and sells for approximately 700 Euros ($975 USD). Hombre is able to produce about 12 of these wheels a day. Located just outside of Bologna is the famous Lamborghini factory and museum. I’m not a gear head but even I was excited to visit this famous car maker. The museum is a collection of some of the most unique and sought after cars ever made by the luxury car maker. I can only imagine how much those amazing vehicles are really worth. Following a walk through the museum, guests can join a tour of the assembly line itself. I found myself wondering which famous mogul would own the car we followed along the assembly line, the artists taking exquisite care with ever detail of manufacture. The Lamborghini Museum and Factory is a must-visit destination regardless of your interest in cars.
When my husband and I visited Italy last year, we each chose one place we wanted to visit. I chose Venice: I wanted to see the famous canals and gondolas first-hand. My husband, a long-time lover of Ducati motorcycles, chose a tour of the Ducati Factory and Museum (http://ducati.com/company/visit_us/index.do?tab=museum). We arrived on a Saturday and, unfortunately, the factory tour doesn't run on the weekends, but luckily the museum was open for tours and had a lot to offer fans of vintage Ducatis. The museum focuses on Ducati’s racing history, with examples of every major Ducati race bike to have won World Championships, the Paris Dakar Rally, and other famous races. My husband was in heaven, able to see up close the motorcycles he'd read about and seen in magazines. The museum tours last about a half hour and provides a lot of interesting information about this classic Italian brand. Tours run at three times on Saturdays: 10:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., and 12:00 noon, and while you potentially can get on the tour as a last-minute walk-up as we did, reservations are highly recommended (you can reserve a place on a tour online). If you find yourself in Bologna and are a motorcycle enthusiast, spend an hour at the fascinating Ducati Factory and Museum - I think you'll enjoy it.
Italy is well known for its food but one of its most famous exports is gelato. A creamy, ice-cream like dessert, gelato can now be found in almost every corner of the world. As one of the main manufacturers of gelato making machines, Carpigiani takes this tasty treat very seriously. At the recently opened Gelato Museum, guests can learn about the history of ice cream and gelato from its earliest origins to the indulgence it is today. Carpigiani even has an ice cream shop on-site so you can taste the latest creations from its team of expert gelato makers.
Have you tried Zampone of Modena? To taste this specialty in the company of enthusiasts, head for Castelnuovo Rangone, and the annual Superzampone Festival. Made from the front trotter of a pig, zampone is an Italian New Year's Eve tradition. The trotter is stuffed with a mixture of lean meats, belly and back skin and neck fat, and seasoned with cinnamon, coriander, cumin and cloves. At home, zampone is boiled and served with lentils (for good luck) or stewed white beans, and mashed potatoes. Since 1989, the Association of Cured Meats Masters in Modena have celebrated their craft with the Super Zampone festival little Castelnuovo di Rangone, not far from Modena. Hugeness, as well as flavor, is the goal: the largest zampone to date weighed in at around almost 1,000 kilos several years ago. More than 20 local butchers work together to feed several thousand festival-goers. The enormous sausage is cooked in the main square inside a big stainless steel zamponiera. The preparation begins on Wednesday, and by Sunday morning, the zampone is ready. After the mega-trotter is hoisted by crane onto a carving table, the meat is carved with much ceremony, and served with a glass of Lambrusco, another local product. The Superzampone Festival takes place on the first Sunday in December. It is one of the last food festivals of the autumn season in Emilia Romagna, just one of the many foodie reasons to visit the Modena region.
