  • Wandering Chef: Mary Sue Milliken in San Francisco
  • 5655 College Ave, Oakland, CA 94618, USA
In Oakland’s Rockridge district, the Market Hall houses Oliveto’s restaurant, a specialty food deli, bakery, coffee shop, pasta shop, florist and produce market. I love to stop by the Oliveto café before heading to San Francisco. Known for it’s seasonally inspired dinners, the downstairs café at Oliveto’s is open daily for breakfast. Yummy oatmeal served with cinnamon sugar and cream is my favorite. The breakfast pizza with a poached egg is a specialty and large enough to share. After breakfast wander along College Avenue visiting independent booksellers and unique small shops, hop on BART (Metro) to SF or grab a deli sandwich for lunch (roast beef & bleu cheese is fantastic) at the Market Food Hall.
  • 2966 Freeport Boulevard
Sacramento locals love Freeport Bakery for its beautiful cakes and yummy treats. Located in the cute Land Park neighborhood, just steps from other fun stops like Taylor’s Market and Marie’s Donuts, Freeport Bakery is a good place to get coffee, relax outside when the weather is nice, and indulge your sweet tooth with the spot’s famous cookies and seasonal treats. The bakery also sells great quiche and other savory items for a quick meal or snack.
  • Charles St, Boston, MA, USA
Starting at the northeast corner of the Public Garden, and stretching to the end of Beacon Hill, Charles St. shopping offers a more boutiquey experience than its better known Newbury St. cousin. The feel is very European, with a mix of small specialty shops, unique restaurants and yummy desert cafes. Make sure to venture off the main drag, and you’ll be rewarded with one of a kind finds you won’t find elsewhere.
  • Bruges, Belgium
Best thing about the European Christmas markets is the street food. This is “Tartiflette”, a French dish from the Haute Savoie region of France. It is made with just a few ingredients - potatoes, reblochon cheese, lardons and onions, and you can have a serving or more at the Bruges Christmas market. You cannot pass by it without getting some. In this cold weather it’s just what the doctor ordered. Six euro will get you a portion big enough to share with another person. Really yummy.
  • 665 S Green Valley Pkwy, Henderson, NV 89052, USA
This Green Valley breakfast/lunch spot and bakery prides itself on being “organically focused.” Salad options range from the California, with avocado, bacon and almonds, to Berry Balsamic, with seasonal berries and goat cheese. The organic, pesticide-free greens are delicious, but it’s difficult to walk out with at least one treat. The beautiful bakery case beckons with yummy peanut butter cookies (some dipped in chocolate), cakes, and even a full gluten-free menu that includes cupcakes and scones.
  • The Lime Tree Café began in 2001 with a single location, and has now become a recognizable part of the Dubai foodie landscape. All the locations offer a relaxed, laid-back vibe, and are committed to providing elegant, simple fare that draws on regional traditions. Much of their food comes from local purveyors, and is organic and pesticide free. Their baked goods (which are yummy!) are made inhouse, and well worth the calories.
  • 38 Rue de Sèvres, 75007 Paris, France
La Grande Épicerie is the food emporium for the Bon Marché department store. A definite spot to buy gourmet food for a picnic or for gifts to take home. It sells over 30,000 gourmet products including groceries, fresh produce, fish, wines and pastries. Grab some french mustard, a baguette, sliced meats, some yummy apples, a sugary sweet treat and head to Luxembourg Gardens for a real feast!
