  • There may not be a lovelier place to golf than Scotland, and Gleneagles resort has one of the most impressive backdrops for a game. The hotel, located on 850 acres in the Perthsire countryside, has three championship golf courses and is home to Scotland’s PGA National Golf Academy. Guests can arrange to work with coaches to improve their game or arrange their own tee time. The course is also open to the public. There’s also a topnotch spa with therapists who can massage achy muscles after a long day on the green. If you prefer to watch, rather than participate, book your trip for September 26-28, 2014 when Gleneagles plays host to the Ryder Cup. Photo c/o Gleneagles
  • Gleneagles Hotel, Auchterarder PH3 1SD, UK
Part of the ‘Leading Hotels of the World’ group, Gleneagles is a destination in and of itself for visitors to Scotland. From their website, “Set within the gentle beauty of 850 acres of Perthshire countryside, this five star [resort] is home to three championship golf courses, a sparkling, award-winning spa and an exhilarating array of outdoor activities.” Fancy learning Falconry? You can. Anxious to become an accomplished equestrian? You can do that too. Want to golf in the footsteps of greats like Jack Nicklaus or Adam Scott? Of course, you can do that as well. Fancy a full day being pampered in a spa? ESPA can sort you out. Don’t know how to make traditional Scottish ‘tablet’ or Christmas Pudding? One of the accomplished chefs can teach you with a cooking demonstration in the grand kitchen. Even those who love to shop, and can’t fathom a trip without a few luxury brands, will find the arcade inside Gleneagles well-stocked to please. Built in the decade where Art Deco was all the rage, today’s Gleneagles still exhibits much of its original architectural detail as well as furniture and lighting. Yet modernity and old world details mix reasonably across guest suites as well as common areas to give the hotel a balanced, elegant feel that’s both welcoming and jaw-dropping at the same time. Be sure to leave time for a meal at the Andrew Fairlie-helmed restaurant on site which is one of only eleven restaurants in the UK to have two Michelin stars.
  • Gleneagles Hotel, Auchterarder PH3 1NF, UK
One of the only restaurants in Scotland to hold two Michelin stars, Andrew Fairlie combines the very best of Scottish and French cooking. The restaurant’s eponymous chef sadly passed away in early 2019 after a long battle with brain cancer, but his expert staff carries on his legacy, continuing to offer the same exquisite food and unrivaled service. Housed in the five-star Gleneagles Hotel in Auchterarder, the restaurant is known for such distinctive dishes as house-smoked Scottish lobster, Perthshire roe deer, and wild-mushroom-and-truffle ravioli, paired with premier wines like Krug Grand Cuvée, Nuits-Saint-Georges, and Barbaresco. Dinner here is a real treat, if an expensive one.
  • TSF Tobacco Auction Floors, 161 Gleneagles Road, Willowvale, Harare 00263, Zimbabwe
There are over one hundred thousand tobacco farmers in Zimbabwe. From February through August each year, the Harare tobacco floors are where farmers, auctioneers and buyers representing China, South Africa, and several European Union countries meet and do business. The tobacco industry has a long history of being one of the top export crops of Zimbabwe, but the industry (along with most agricultural production) took a hit after President Mugabe forcibly removed white farmers from their land, redistributing it back to black landowners in early 2000. Domestic investors are once again funding the large-scale production of the crop and production has rebounded.
