With more art and culture per square mile than any other country in the world, Holland has unique treasures on view ranging from the original Dutch masters to contemporary designers. Holland’s museums are just one way to absorb the country’s deep connection to art and culture.
Who is your favorite Dutch artist and why?

I love Vincent van Gogh and specifically the period where he was living in the south of France. While it is some of his most famous work, his time in Arles and St. Remy capture for me the true essence of this wonderful region in Southern France.

I agree with Melissa- Vincent van Gogh is one of my favorites.  When I was in Amsterdam I remember walking through the Van Gogh museum and being blown away by seeing his work first-hand.

Piet Mondrian - I love the De Stijl movement (originated in the Netherlands), and the philosophy and thinking that goes with it.

so many wonderful artists. of course for his amazing representation of light and draped fabric, vermeer. also, the texture and color of a van gogh is undeniable in person, the aggressive energy of de kooning, the beautiful contrasts of photographer anton corbijn, and who can forget the architecture of rietveld and koolhaas?

Mondrian. I had a light fixture I loved as a child that was similar to his graphic works and never knew it until I started studying art history. It's very clean and simple and bold.

There are way too many choices, but I can't help going towards landscapes and seascapes: Ruysdael, Avercamp, Mesdag

Vermeer, because each one of his few paintings tells a wonderful, complex story about his time and place.

Both of the Bruegels. Their work is forward, fascinating, and funny, even through today's eyes.

There are so many amazing Dutch artists. Vermeer, stands out, what a master.  Of course another master, Rembrandt and then great abstract  painter Willem de Kooning.

Vermeer. I don't know why for sure. It was just so amazing to be standing in front of several at the Rijksmuseum. I would not budge from in front of "The Little Street" when the tour groups would arrive. Those masterpieces are for one on one conversations--not for viewing in a huge tour group!
