Where is the best place to travel for Easter weekend 2011 in central Europe (April 22-25)? I will be near Luzern, Switzerland and am looking for an accessible destination with a unique cultural twist.

Katherine - I would recommend Prague or Budapest. Both are easy to get to by train or a quick flight and have a lot to offer culturally. Whatever you decide, enjoy! Mike

Thank you! Both those cities sound great for the long Easter weekend. I'll definitely have to check those out!

Do you want to focus on the events of Easter celebration or are you just looking for an interesting destination?

Add a commentI am mainly looking for an interesting destination for Easter weekend that offers a variety of attractions. I will be taking the train from either Luzern or Zurich, Switzerland. Do you know of any destinations around that area that have unique Easter related events?

if you've grown up around traditional Easter services (like those held in Catholic or protestant churches) you might find it kind of fun to visit a Greek or Russian or locally-flavored Orthodox church instead. Just be prepared to stand! as my experience has been that a lot of Orthodox churches don't any seating at all. And their services are usually at least 2 hours long - and for Easter it might be even longer!

Thank you Mark for the stunning photos- those are excellent! I would love to experience a traditional service, so I will look into that. Thanks for the pictures and advice!

if you are looking for an easter experience I would head to southern Spain. Seville is most well known, but when I was there a couple of years ago, Granada had quite a big celebration going on as well.

Add a commentThank you for the suggestion! You're completely right! I was actually in Sevilla last Easter and it's certainly a sight to see! I am considering returning back to Sevilla, but I'll have to see where people in my group want to go.

If you are looking for a religious Easter experience nothing can top Easter Mass in Vatican City. Just be mindful that most other touristy attractions will be closed on the day of and day after the holiday.

depending on where you end up - keep an eye on accommodation, and plan ahead. You can easily get stuck without anywhere to stay around that time.
