What can you tell me about travel to Mexico right now? I am thinking about going on a trip to Playa del Carmen in May, however I am concerned about the current situation there.

It depends on where you're going. You will want to check out www.travel.state.gov to check out the latest travel warnings and alerts for Mexico.

You shouldn't listen to and be scared of everything you see in the Media. I go down there several times a year and feel perfectly safe... of course I'm not going to Nogales or Cuidad Juarez or any of the northern border towns. Remember, there are over 15,000 murders/deaths caused by guns every year in the USA. WE should be afraid to leave your own homes! We should all remember to try to keep things in perspective. I hope you decide to go down there and experience wonderful Mexico. If you do go, make sure to go into the jungle and swim in some cenotes, and a visit to Coba' makes the trip worthwhile all on its own. Hire a rickshaw at Coba's entrance to take you through the ruins and be sure to climb to the very top of the pyramid for an AMAZING view. Happy travels!

Add a commentA good friend of mine visited Merida & playa del Carmen this past spring and loved it. She specifically mentioned she never felt unsafe during her time there. Hope you decide to visit! :)

Add a commentWe cross the border and go to La Fonda all the time. Its wonderfully romantic and safe. From there we usually visit Ensenada or Rosarito in the day time. Travell at night is not recommended. I would go anywhere in Mexico at the drop of a hat, I love tiles and want to go to Puebla. The drug wars are awful, but I haven't seen any headlines that tourists are in bad danger, and you can certainly get killed anywhere... The tourism industry is in shambles because everybody is so frightened, you can probably get incredible deals.

Add a commentMexico is great! I'm heading there in about a week. The boarder areas are a bit sketchy right now, but the rest of Mexico is fantastic! If you are nervous, head to some of the more developed areas and then find a less touristy area. Like Cancun, but go to Tulum or Isla Holbox. San Miguel de Allende, but go to Guanajato. Cabo San Lucas, but go to Todos Santos or Los Barriles.

Add a commentI agree with previous bloggers. dont go to the border towns at all, anyway they are not that interesting and not worth your life.
if you like the beach the Yucatan is great. if you like culture San Miguel is the best. Mexico is still an inexpensive place to go. have fun.

Add a commentI think the best way to answer this question is to ask yourself how much you lean toward safe, secure, predictable travel experiences. Versus those that involve a little risk. Are you likely to be caught in the middle of gun fire between the cartels? No...not likely. Much of the violence is around border towns (Tijuana, Ciudad Juarez, along the West Coast, and the three largest cities (Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey). That's not to suggest that the Yucatan is free of any of this. But compared to the other areas, it's not quite at that level.
Playa del Carmen can be a fun area. Again, it depends on your interests. It is surrounded by monstrous mega-resorts. Again, it's all dependent on your likes and dislikes.
Personally, having been there a few times, my partner and I are pretty much finished with Mexico as a whole. But not because we felt unsafe due to violence. Rather, it's a bit intolerant of differences with people.

Add a commentIf you fly into Cancun directly from the States, you shouldn't have any problems at all (just be aware / alert as usual). I would second Dawn's suggestion just so you are aware of any travel warnings.

Add a commentPlaya del Carmen is a fun little city with lots of great places to eat, drink and be merry. It is generally a lot safer in the Yucatan area than the border areas, but awareness of your surroundings is always a good idea, and I would not go wandering off the main streets too much. You might want to look at the chain of responses to a similar question posed by Dany Martel back in November. Some of the best snorkeling/scuba in the world is in the Caribbean off the coast of the Yucatan. You have the cenotes and the Mayan ruins too. The main pedestrian area of Playa del Carmen has tons of restaurants. There is also a bar there that has swings instead of barstools! Looks like a lot of fun, unless you have had too much to drink, then it might be difficult to get off the swings without stumbling. I would not let the current security situation in Mexico deter you from your trip, but keep up to date with the state department website and use common sense.

Add a commentI spent about a month in Puebla (about 2 hours from Mexico city) and felt perfectly safe; even when I visited Mexico City (which I had read was a tumultuous place to go), I felt quite comfortable. However, as with any place, be aware of your surroundings and of tourist traps. Other than that, I wish you the best!!!

Add a commentI was in Mexico twice last year and experienced no problems. We were not in towns particularly popular with Americans and this may have worked to our advantage. We were in Queretaro, Morelia, and Guanajuato. All of these places felt very safe.

Add a commentAvoid the border cities and Acapulco and you should be ok. Fly, don't drive. Cabo should still be safe and as well as the Mexican Riveria.

My husband and I have spent a month there in the last year.
Fly into Cancun and head out of town down route 307. It is a brand new road and easy to navigate, but make sure to bring toilet paper as the gas stations are usually out. Playa is in a family friendly area, not at all bothered by the current border problems near El Paso. If you are looking for something a little less tourity, you may want to try Puerto Morelso, the small fishing viaaage between Cancun and Puerto. It has a charming town square, lots of restaurants, ample inexpensive hotels, scuba, snorkeling and deep sea fishing. A zoo where you can get hands on with crocs, monkeys and snakes, shops that are cheeper than playa and jungle adventures including ziplining and swimming in crytal clear cenotes.
That being said, the best snorkeling in the area in furthur south in Akumal and half moon Bay. You can do a day trip there from Playa or Puerto if you like. Even climb mayan ruins in the jungle at Coba and then snorkel in the afternoon. I have LOTS of info if you are interested, including places to stay, restaurants to check out and people who can set up tours.
Let me know if you are interested and would like more info. Definitly check out the website www.locogringo.com

Add a commenthttp://www.huffingtonpost.com/social/JimInHouston/nra-should-have-no-say-ov_b_834715_80553077.html 31,000 gunshot deaths a year & 70,000 more gunshot wounds, I wouldn´t travel the USA so much. I have been in Playa del Carmen 7 years & there has been 1 gunshot . Play is a great vacation desntination. Good luck.
