My wife and are are planning a long weekend in New Orleans. Neither of us have been there. Should we stay in the French Quarter or is that too touristy and cliche. Any high-end hotel recommendations?

I find the French Quarter, especially the part towards Canal Street where many high end hotels are, to be really touristy. House on Bayou Road is a very nice property in a much more interesting neighborhood. Or if you want something in a safer place go for the Garden District.

Add a commentThe French Quarter is unquestionably touristy, but it has great proximity to most of what you'll want to see. The real question is, will you be driving. The parking/driving situation in the Quarter is a nightmare. If you're driving (or even if you're not) I highly recommend the neighboring CBD (Central Business District). It's much quieter, easier to get in and out of, and less than a 5 minute walk to the French Quarter.
As to hotels, I don't know what you like, but I'm a big fan of the International House hotel, The Roosevelt (great restaurant and bar) and The Windsor Court (a New Orleans classic). Hope you have a wonderful trip.

Add a commentI just came back from a fantastic stay at the International House. It was close (but not too close) to the French Quarter and the staff were so friendly and helpful. We were there for French Quarter Fest and the guys at the desk gave us recommendations about where to go and what to see & even let us check in at 9am so we could get out and get going.
And if you're looking for a great meal close by, try to get a reservation at August- the food was phenomenal.

Add a commentI think it would be good to stay close to the French Quarter because you can see so much within walking distance. I would recommend the Roosevelt Hotel with it's great Sazerac Bar and Restaurant and also the Monteleone with its famous Carousel Bar.

Add a commentI'd also recommend staying near the Quarter. It's touristy but it's also where most of the great restaurants and attractions are. I love the Marigny Triangle and I'd recommend finding a hotel there if you can. It's also got great restaurants as well as lots of music clubs and it's walking distance to the Quarter. The Garden District is beautiful but it's a cab ride away from the Quarter.
