Low Cost Airplane flights between US and Malaysia question. I'm booking a flight from USA, California to Penang, Malaysia. It seems that the best strategy is to buy a ticket between the US and Singapore, with a major airline. This is the least expensive. And then book from Singapore to Penang, which is really cheap.
Reduces the price from about 3k to 1.5k. Question: what is the best way to book a flight from Singapore to Penang on the airlines based in asia. Are there any that I can trust more than others? Thanks!

Singapore Airlines will stopover Tokyo, Narita and Singapore before reaching Penang, and there is another option you could consider by flying with Cathay Pacific that goes to Penang International Airport hub in Hong Kong, one stop transit. 2) The price of the air fare is depend on which month your reservation fall in, low season (April, May, Sept, October, November) or peak season (June, July, August, December). 3) Back to the question : The best way to book a flight from Singapore to Penang on the airlines based in Asia. Followings are the airlines that connect to Penang from Singapore : 1) Tiger Airways (Singapore) -tigerairways.com 2) Silk AIr (Singapore) - silkair.com or singaporeair.com 3) Air Asia (Malaysia budget carrier) - airasia.com 4) Malaysia Airlines -malaysiaairlines.com Best way to book is online, E-ticket. Sometimes, there is a promotional rates available online. We would suggest to make the reservation at least 14 days in advance or more to get a lower rate.

Add a commentAirasia.com has a route SIN > PENANG.
They're kinda like Southwest. Cheap. Friendly. Gets you where you need to go.

Add a commentEileen - A few weeks ago I flew on Singapore Airlines from Singapore to KL. It was relatively inexpensive, provide great service and they are beyond reliable. They also likely fly from SIN to Penang, but you'll have to check. Another cheaper option is Silkair. Ive flown them to Thailand and they are quite nice as well. Ive also heard that Malaysia Airlnes its safe and clean...however, I havent tried them yet. Enjoy!

Add a commentYeah, as Michael said already, Singapore Airlines is safe, efficient and reliable (and wonderful service) and I feel the same way about Malaysian Air. The service of those two airlines puts the US major airlines to shame.

Add a commentHi Eileen,
I just recently flew with AirAsia all over that region on my honeymoon. They've been voted the world's best budget airline in 2009 and 2010, but it's clear that they are a budget airline (drinks and snacks must be purchased, seating is a bit cramped, etc), but our tickets were dirt cheap and three of our four flights with them left on time, with one being delayed about 20 minutes. I would definitely recommend them, especially for a such flight like Singapore-Penang.

Add a commentHello Eileen. I think I can help with that.
If you're looking for a budget carrier, use either tiger airways, jetstar asia, or AirAsia. My first choice would be AirAsia. Biggest in the region(soon the world), cheapest, and the most flights.
If you're booking early, you should check out offers on Malaysia Airlines, the flag carrier, especially if you have a lot of luggage and don't want to run through Changi airport to change terminals.
You are right about flying to Singapore first if you want a direct flight closest to your final destination. Alternatively, a lot of us transit through the UK or the middle east, as there are flights direct to Penang from there. I'm not so sure about the prices if you buy from the states though.

Agree about using the budget airlines - the flight is quite short and you will be fine with Tiger, AirAsia, and JetStar if you transit through Singapore first. I lived in Singapore a few years ago and flew these airlines regularly for a weekend getaway, so no hesitation recommending them.

Add a commentEileen, Try attitudetravel.com for booking direct flights on low cost Asia Carriers. You will probably have to fly a "major to Singapore, Tokyo, Taiwan, etc. Also give yourself plenty of time for connections. You will have to claim luggage, clear customs and quite possibly leave from another airport, like you do in Mumbai. Usually not that bad.
