Question

Looking for cheap, discounted flights from Toronto to London! Doesn't have to be a direct flight....what's the best, economical route? Through New York? Through Manchester? Or is direct cheapest?

sidestep is a great is a great site for flights and you can set up fare alerts so that you can snap them up as soon as they hit the level that you want.

www.sidestep.com

Christine, Have you tried Kayak.com? I have had good luck there on quite a few occasions. Good luck! Joe

Christine - Ive found that going into Gatwick airport can be cheaper than Heathrow. Manchester is also not a bad choice. You may need to change planes though in NY or Newark. I tend to go through Newark as its more convenient...while still having relatively cheap flights on BA or Continental. Good luck! - Mike

Christine, First off, just keep in mind that there's more to the TRUE cost of your ticket than the fare.

Don't forget to weigh the potential baggage fees across the airlines in contention if you're flying with more than a carry on.  Also, depending on where you're staying, it may be significantly more expensive (or time consuming) to fly into one airport versus the other.  I like to use Google maps to see if the $30 I saved on airfare will be spent on a more expensive cab ride.  For example, I live in New York and I'll often try to fly into LaGuardia because it's a less expensive cab ride home (about $30 each way) than if I fly into JFK (about $50 each way).

Now, to actually answer your question, I like meta-search engines like Mobissimo.com, travel.bing.com and Kayak.com which Joe mentioned because they search a wide swath of available fares. Once you've done a few searches, you'll get an idea of what the best routes and least expensive airlines are for your trip and you can focus on your time on the ground.

V Ito Ellison:  Boy, you gave a very good answer to this question, one that's been asked in various forms lately.  I hope the AFAR people read these posts/ answers and put this kind of information into the magazine so a lot more people can read answers like yours!

I almost always fly to London with Air Transat.  I've found that they consistently have the lowest price to London.  They are charter so don't expect a lot in terms of comfort/major service, but I've never had any issues with them and have always found the flights to be more than satisfactory.  Like others say though, it's good to use a site that will do a mass internet search for you because sometimes the bigger airlines will have a  sale. For example, a couple of years ago I flew to London on Icelandair with a three day stopover in Iceland for approx. $600.

I've noticed airline ticket prices have seen to steadily gone up so beyond flying into a cheaper airport (Gatwick) and checking for prices (constantly!), try to have flexible dates.  October in London is great and you'll find smaller crowds and lower flight prices as well.  Good luck!

Give Icelandair a try: http://www.icelandair.com

They might have some good deals for you, plus flying with them is comfortable and you can check in two pieces of luggage. Rare these days.

Hi Christine - Have you tried flying in and out of regional airports ? IE Gatwick vs Heathrow. Perhaps Air Canada connecting through secondary NY area airport like Newark, Buffalo, or White Plains?    Best sites to see multiple route online is YAPTA or KAYAK.

Best of luck,

Kelly

Travelzoo is good for deals - right now there is one posted - i'm not sure what dates you're looking for...

I used to do toronto - london 3 or 4 times each way per year and i always found direct was cheapest - often air canada was actually the cheapest (I could always find something for 800$ or less) so that would be good to try as well.

sometimes if you look where you might never expect to find...for instance...Air India...if they have flights from Toronto to India...with a stop in London...or Kuwaiti Airlines....from Toronto to Kuwait City with stop in London....you might be able to just book the first segment for much cheaper

Agree with others - Kayak is always my first stop. I would go to www.kayak.com/buzz and search for the lowest fares from Toronto to Europe to see what fares others have found recently to LON and other European airports.

But I would also check Booking Buddy, Mobissimo, Fly.com, Yapta, and the usual Expedia, Orbitz/Cheaptickets since sometimes they have cheaper flights (but usually with longer layovers) than Kayak. You could also try cfares.com. I believe Bookingbuddy (and Kayak) also have the same useful fare alert feature as Sidestep as mentioned above by Tanyia.

Yapta is useful for tracking fares and for registering your flight info once purchased. Yapta's big thing is that it can help you get a refund from the airlines in case the fare drops further (depending on the airline and the fine print), though I've never been in that situation personally.

Try IcelandicAir, with a free stop (a few days???) in Iceland.

Concur on Icelandair. If you can get a long enough lay over, you can pop out to the Blue Lagoon spa/hot springs for a nice soak.
