I'm planning a trip to Thailand with two other couples and would love some location/time of year advice!

We're going to rent a villa, so the location must have a supply of vacation rentals that are not part of a hotel. This also means that truly off-the-beaten-path destinations are probably not ideal.

We don't want something overly touristy, but the group does enjoy having access to places to eat. Shopping and tourist "attractions" are not important at all.

We all enjoy beaches and this is primarily a beach vacation, so ready access to great beaches is a must. Other outdoor activities such as hiking and diving are also welcome.

My research has narrowed down the options to Phuket, Ko Samui, Ko Pha-Gnan and Ko Chang.

Any advice on these destinations related to our criteria?

Also - November would probably be the time that works for all of us... I gather that the weather in Samui and Ko Chang might be dicey that time of year.
