Question

I'm headed to Melbourne, Australia for work in a couple weeks. There for around two weeks I won't get too much down time since I am there to work, but hopefully a weekend and some early days off. Where and what activities would you guys recommend?

I will have a car so can go on short day trips also willing to sweat so hiking and climbing are all good too.

Take 2-3 days and drive the great ocean road to Port Campbell. See the 12 Apostles. See the Cape Otway Lighthouse and the many Koalas roaming there.

Sounds like a road trip is much needed to see the views and nature!

Definitely go down the Great Ocean Road - really beautiful and you can go as far as you want with the time allowed.

Also check out St Kilda - nice beachfront suburb.

Melbourne has a great live music scene - look at places like Northcote, Fitzroy or Brunswick - a lot of the bars or working men's clubs have some great bands playing.

The Victoria Market is a must - awesome place with lots of food stalls and also clothing, souvenirs etc etc. There is a tour for about $30 that you can do around the market too.

National Gallery of Vistoria - If you love art.

Federation Square - really bright and colourful and a great place to start exploring Melbourne.

Go up the 92-storey Eureka Tower in Melbourne’s Southbank - great views over the city

Hidden Secrets - The Lanes and Arcades Tour at A$70 per person - shows you parts of Melbourne you never knew existed.

Botanic Gardens - really pretty.

Get on a tram and just go for a ride around the city.

If you love wine then go to the Mornington Peninsula — the famous wine-producing region on the coast about 45 minutes from Melbourne.

Shopping - Melbourne has AMAZING shops - need I say more!

Agree w/ Katherine. We did most of her recommendations, but would add a tour of the Melbourne Gaol (it's fasinating). Fitzroy Gardens has Capt Cook's cottage, which was sent to Australia from England. I should also add that on the Great Ocean Road you'll have your best chance of seeing 'Roos! Especially when taking some of the walks to the many ocean landscapes.

Awesome thanks for the suggestions! Definitely going to bring an empty bag to take home everything I bought. Would you say the Hidden Secrets tour is worth the $70? Thanks to C.P. for the Great Ocean Road suggestion since I'll have my DSLR with me.
