Question

I'm headed to India at the end of the year, and wondering if anyone can suggest a good camera to invest in. I currently have a Canon G10, which I love, but want something with better depth of field. I'm hesitant to get a DSLR because they're so heavy and big. I'm not a photographer, just starting to get into it! Thanks for your help fellow adventurers!

Colleen, I'm a photographer who has been to India and while I shoot with a DSLR I also carry a Canon G9 and have made great images with it. Your G10 is the only camera you need. Regarding depth of field (DOF) it is related to the f stop, not the camera. On your G10 you can set the camera's aperture to f/8 or smaller and you're depth of field will be very wide. If you don't understand what I mean, write me back and I'll get into more detail. DOF is also related to how much you zoom. The more you zoom, the smaller the DOF.

I recently traded in my Canon DSLR gear for the Sony NEX-5N, for the simple reason that I found myself unwilling to lug the bulkier Canon equipment with me when I travel. I find that I get just as good a shot with a fraction of the weight/space. I agree with Joseph Cyr that the best camera is the one you have with you, so my suggestion is simply to pick something that you know you’ll take along for the trip. You can do a lot with a cell phone these days, and some of my favorite shots have been taken (under the right conditions) with a point-and-shoot. I think just about any stand-alone camera available now has more than enough firepower to take a suitably sharp image with a file size large enough for printing. Also, I highly recommend using a tripod whenever possible – even a mini-pod. You may find that dramatically increases the number of usable shots.

I have a very small compact Panasonic Lumix Leica lens 12x zoom camera. I love the pictures it takes. Buy an extra battery! Have a great trip.

I would suggest some of the new 3/4th cameras, Ricoh, Panasonic, Fuji. They all have interchangeable lenses, minus the bulk of the of a DSLR. Also check out Canon's new Powershot GX1. Enjoy your trip to my home country!

I love taking travel photos but don't want to suffer the weight and bulk of a single lens reflex camera. Besides, I like the spontaneity of whipping out my camera and snapping a pic. I recently got the Nikon 1 V1 - a point and shoot that takes great pics. I got the telephoto lens for it - which I keep on the camera all the time. I love it.

Hi there,

Recommend a point and shoot canon s90. It's small and adjusts well to many different light conditions.
