Question

If you had to name one "don't miss" thing in Dublin (whether it's an attraction, tour, bar, etc.), what would it be? I'll be there March 16-18 and could use some not-already-in-the-guidebook suggestions. Thanks!

Dublin--at least to me--isn't really the check-sites-off-a-list sort of place. One of the best things to do there, weather permitting, is to just walk. And if the weather won't allow, you can take part in another great Dublin activity: sitting in a pub, drinking beer, and chatting with the locals.

Like David said, if weather permits, walking is great. Also, having a picnic in St. Stephen's square and just people watching.

My two favorite touristy activities: Guiness factory (they have a bar at the end of tour with 365 view of dublin) and the Literary pub crawl tour--esp if you are a fan of Irish lit/poetry/theater.

Can you elaborate a bit on the Guiness "factory" tour, please? When I visited 25 years ago, there was no tour, just a video and a free pint. Did you see the production area? Just wondering if it's worth re-visiting. Cheers!

I can tell you what to miss: The vomit on the sidewalks on Saturday and Sunday morning. Runners beware!

well, two things or maybe three... the" long library , NOT "the new one at trinity college. the book of kells used to be there but has moved to a venue better for viewing. if not that, walk into the newman hall of univ college, dublin on stephen's green and marvel at the stucco work. then catch a "session" at o'donoughue's off the green towards leeson st. ( no vomit which is in temple bar which you should skip altogether)..music is tin whistle, bodrain, pipes...wonderful.

Although it's a bit (OK more than a bit) touristy, the Guiness Pub tour really is worth it. Then just fine a Temple Bar pub with a good band, and while away the time... Honestly, nothing else in Dublin really stands out to me.

This link will give you a start on Paddy's events: http://www.stpatricksfestival.ie/

Two years ago I was a volunteer helping register people for a cultural treasure hunt, people could not understand why an American would do that but I was able to talk with the real people of Dublin.

A bus tour of the Wickow mountains is relaxing and gets you out of the city tourism.

You can take the Dart train to Malahide for a few Euros; tour the castle there, and look at boats in the harbor. Its easy to walk around the small village and eat/drink with locals. I stayed there my last night at the Grand Hotel and took an easy bus to the airport in the morning.

Howth is another pretty fishing village on the same Dart line, but a little closer. Good restaurant selection and great views to the sea.

I thought the Grinness Storehouse was priced too high, and there wasn't anyone to ask questions of. But, it seems to be a Dublin trademark, the view from the top is ok and you feel you've earned the pint by reading all the displays (the marketing displays did interest me).

In Dublin be sure to walk along the Liffey and cross a few bridges.

Wait, did you say 1 thing? Sorry

Hello Sarah,

I was in Dublin last year about this time. The city is filled with beautiful architecture, so just walking the old city center is a joy, but if you enjoy art, I suggest visiting the National Gallery and the Dublin City Gallery, The Hugh Lane. The National Gallery has a very good collection, and is housed in a beautiful building. The Hugh Lane is smaller, but includes an impressive collection of Impressionist paintings. http://www.hughlane.ie/

Have a great time, Jason

There will be a citywide treasure hunt on the 18th, I think and one of my favorite things to do is the Literary Pub Crawl.

Seeing the churches/cathedrals (St. Patrick's, etc) and the touristy but interesting Guinness Storehouse. If you have a student ID (or are an OAP-old age pensioner) you can get discounted admissions to everything. Kilmanham Gaol is worth a visit.

The Guinness brewery and the vibe in Temple Bar.

If you are of Irish heritage (or have an interest in modern Irish history) then you will enjoy the tour of Kilmainham Jail (http://www.heritageireland.ie/en/dublin/kilmainhamgaol/)  easy to reach on both local and sightseeing buses. It can be a very emotional experience...

If you saw 'Once' then you will want to see St. Stephen's Green, a beautiful park.  Also the Guinness Storehouse is a fun tour, especially the bar at the end of the tour with fresh beer.

Dublin is a small city. Do the tourist things and you will find your own little gems.

For something different hop on the train, like the locals do, and spend half a day at Howth on the coast. Walk around the town and the harbour and have great seafood or just plain fish and chips.

If you have some money hire a car for the day and pick some spot in the countryside and just drive for the day. Stop at a country pub for lunch. Dublin is brilliant because you will be back in town bye dinner time. Get a GPS it takes the stress away.
