If you had 60,000 miles on American Airlines (which I do)... where would you go (or, more importantly, where should I go?!) and when would you go?? I'm torn... Buenos Aires, Italy, Prague, Amsterdam, Barcelona/Spain... other place I may not have considered...

I would say.....Buenos Aires!!!!! And then take the boat to Uruguay to see the Maldonaldo coast during the fall..which is March, April, and May, after the high season for some boho chic.
Happy Trails!

Add a commentKate, all great choices, I'd choose a European destination from New York. The flight will be shorter and you will have more options for when and where to fly. Free tickets can be sort of a pain for options. I recently went to Prague and had a great time.

Add a commentFly to Amsterdam for the start of your European trip. Everything is 1-6 hours so definitely visit a couple of other countries while you're there.

Add a commentSpain should be high on your list. Don't miss Andalucia and the Costa del Sol.

Amsterdam, duh...the most wondrous city on Earth. Let me know if you visit...I'll show you around!

Add a commentThanks for the offer Melissa - I just may take you up on that!! what time of year is best to visit?

@Kate, come for tulip time, in late March-early May, when things are starting to thaw out. Then again, you could come for Queensday at the end of April...craziest day of the year and loads of fun if you're a party animal!

Don't know if American Airlines flies to Asia but if so, I'd go back to Burma (Myanmar), North Vietnam, Angkor Wat, etc in Cambodia. I've always wanted to go to the Patagonia region of South America.. on my list of places to see before I leave this Earth. Of course, the Galapagos while it's still there. Botswana is amazing. American probably partners with other airlines. All of Europe that you mentioned is interesting and you'll not go wrong with any of the places you suggested. I'm particularly fond of Italy... tops in food, art, architecture, history, etc...... I hear that Prague is changing very quickly so maybe that would be a good place to start. Now, that I've typed all this, I'm thinking maybe 60,000 isn't enough for some of those more distant places I've mentioned... I would also suggest not trying to see too much too quickly. I might suggest spending several weeks within about a 50 mile radius of a major city.. once spent two weeks south of Paris within 50 miles.. it was wonderful to just poke about.. HAVE FUN!!! Best to you!

I got a ticket with Cathay with AA... going to SE Asia for two weeks!

oneworld offers a range of "multi-destination" itineraries that require you to fly on three different carriers but are AMAZING miles values for a longer trip; I used mine on my trip around the world and it was amazing what I got -- their business class upgrades are an even better deal, often costing not a whole lot more in miles than economy. Click on the "oneworld award chart" in this section to see more. If you have more time, this is the way to go!

Prague is fantastic!!!! It has such a cool vibe. You can take tour vans or buses to visit the
UNESCO World Hertiage Medieval Cities. They have great food, beer and wine!
You can go on to Vienna and leave out of there.
If you are into biking there are biking tours there via www.cyclingsafaries.com

Add a commentwas thinking about doing prague & amsterdam... maybe 3-4 days each... fly into one... overnight train to the other and fly home from there. is that crazy? i've never been to either... i like your idea of hitting a couple spots. maybe vienna is more convenient, though i've never thought of going there before...

That would be a great trip either Amsterdam or Vienna. I think Vienna might be easier . I've been to all three and all of them are really fantastic cities!! You will really love it. Everyone is so nice in all of those cities!!! Have a blast!!

With a name like yours: go to Genova :-) A city not much appreciated by the tourbooks but still has its own charm, very rich history and incredible food. Not to mention that one of Italy's top tourist spot 5 Terre is only an hour away and the Ligurian coast is beautiful.
Alternatively consider doing a Prague/Vienna/Budapest triangle or you may add Bratislava too in the middle and compare the 4 major population centers of the former Hapsburg Empire. They are easy few hour train rides away.

Add a commentI do want to get to Italy.... and so many places... *sigh*
I'll have to look up Genova. I've heard of the island of Genoa (which i think is where my way back fam might be from)...
Budapest... hmmm... triangle. this is an interesting idea!!

I'd go to Santiago de Chile and from there to Vina del Mar and Valparaiso.

Add a commentDown to Guayaquil to see the Galapagos, of course!
Or better yet, redeem your miles on partner Cathay Pacific and head somewhere in Asia. Even their coach seats on their A340s are comfortable, and the service is quite pleasant. They have some of the hardest-working cabin crew and always have a smile for you.

Madrid/Barcelona, but remember it's winter. Or Rio de Janeiro/Buenos Aires, where it's summer now.

Add a commentI wouldn't let the vagaries of airline mileage plans dictate where THE most important travel of your entire life will happen ;-D) Seriously, go to the places that move you (and if you feel compelled to fly on American, use the miles to upgrade to first class, fly where you want to, when you want to, on YOUR schedule.
Since you are "Genovese" you should start your travels in Genoa (cheap flight to Milano, then train.) Genoa is an amazing city! Hop an overnight ferry to Cagliari, Sardegna. Go explore the coastline near Santa Maria di Navarese. Then another boat to Sicilia, and another to the island of Pantelleria. Mud bath at "Venus' Handmirror" on the island. Then continue on to Tunisia.
How many months did you say you had to travel?
Good luck, happy travels.

Add a commentyou are funny.... "months to travel"... I live in NYC... I had a week and a half vacation! then, back to work. I took advantage of my american miles and flew to London... on to Prague... took train to Vienna... then flew back home from there. It was great and I saved money by not paying for the flight!

Kate. Good decision on Cathay Pac. I'm a Lifetime Platinum AAd member, and have flown just about everywhere. Cathay Pac is just a marvelous airline. If Kuala Lumpur is your hub, make sure you get to Singapore and, perhaps, Bangkok....two of my favorite places. Also in Malaysia is Penang, an amazing colonial city. Have a great time....and be safe.

Been there! love USVI & BVI... can get decent airfare to the islands... aiming for Europe with my miles. :)

Last April, I flew to Tokyo for 50,000 miles on AA. I'd look at the farthest off destination you're interested in and work your way back from there. Alternatively, if there's a city you want to visit with particularly pricy hotels (which can happen at high season or during special events and conventions anywhere), use the free miles to fly there so that you can spend your savings on the hotel.

Rio! You can get rt air to Rio, stopping only in Miami, for 80k I believe. I'm sure buying the additional 20k miles would be well worth it! Now if you could only pay for that visa with miles....
