Glasgow: Cy Laurie, the owner of Laurie's Bar (Yup, had to go there since my name is Laurie - this is a popular surname in Scotland) walked me down the road to a small place where they were having a "trad night' which is like an open mic night where anyone can come sing and play instruments. The night I went there were guitars, fiddles, tin whistles and even a mandolin. It was magical. Mostly traditional folk music from slow ballads to peppy jigs. Best night ever.
Laurie's is good, too, for more modern music. They have a large room for small concerts. Laurie's Bar, 34 King Street, Glasgow G1 5QT. Ph. 0141 552 7123

Whenever I took buses or trains between towns/cities in Scotland I would always end up sitting with a local. The Glaswegians have a much stronger accent! They were always very friendly and ready to give advice about the best places to go and best ways to get there. Also, just to put it out there - Glasgow is not as popular as Edinburgh, but it's at least as cool and not quite as touristy.

Add a commentWe'll go then. Glasgow it is. We like a little "grit" in out travels. Any place in particular you recommend?

Hang out in the pubs in the evenings. We had the best time in Edinburgh meeting locals in the pubs near University of Edinburgh, even took an excursion to Rosslyn as part of a suggestion by a local :)

Pubs during pub quiz is good. Also, stay just outside the city (in a B&B) if you can.

A shame, but true to all of the above. You might also try some activities where local people are involved, conservation, fly fishing etc. make sure also that you visit the small towns and villages rahter than the bigger cities. This is where you find the real Scot.
