Brett,

I posted some recommendations from my Italian cousin who lives in Rome here, see if these help:

I've eaten at a handful of them while visiting him and can vouch they were good!  Enjoy your time there, Rome is one of my very favorite cities!

Brett, there are lots of restaurants you can easily find and you don't have to spend extravagantly to have great food!  I can never remember the names of the ones I go to because I just happen upon them, as I just like to walk everywhere without necessarily knowing where I'm going.

I will say though, on 1 of the 3 trips I made to Rome, my friend and I did go with a guide and it was with a small group of 6-8 people through the Trastevere which means "across the Tiber".  It has a distinctive old world feel to it as it used to be an artisan district - and there are still some artisan shops in business that have continued their trade for many generations. And the restaurants are less pricey here than in the more popular landmarks. Enjoy!

I have access to some very good guides, but they are expensive.  Along the lines of about 500 Euros.  I am not so sure that in Rome you really need a guide unless you are truly interested in a mind-filling day of historical facts.  I find that some basic research and a good guide book allows you to appreciate the place rather than overwhelmed by facts.  Another option is an outfit called Context Travel which has small group tours (2-8 people) that focus on particular interests.

Go to the AMAZING Pizzeria Roscioli around the corner form Campo Di Fiori. For great pasta dishes go to Maccheroni. Cul De Sac on Via del Governo Vecchio for great antipasti. That street in general has amazing shops and a great gelateria called Frigidarium and a cute cafe called Novecento for a cappuccino and small lunch.

Hm, I wonder what happened to your image?   Did you by chance attach an image using the Google Images application?

I attached the photo via "link to an image on the web" ... it was supposed to be this photo --

Ah - that image is an "all rights reserved" image, so there must be some sort of blocker on it.  You'll see the copyright if you right-click on it.  According to Flickr, "pages on other websites that display content hosted on flickr.com must provide a link from each photo or video back to its page on Flickr." Only linking directly to the photo file doesn't do this.  So, that makes sense to me now. Thanks for the info - that's something we should be able to fix.  :)

I think enjoyrome.com is still around.  They do lots of different tours by locals and I've used them with great success.  Specialized tours do NOT have to be expensive.  Go on line and check with Viator to get tours that are limited in size and done by locals.
