Take in the Museum of Civilization in Hull and Ottawa's Byward Market.

Add a commentMuseum of Civilization is a must, but make sure you spend some time walking along the canal, that is one of my favorite places! Tons of restaurants/pubs in the Byward Market, so that is a must as well while in Ottawa. The Parliament building grounds are usually open so you can walk around, also there are walking paths all around this area. If you decide the War Monument is very stunning and there are history all along downtown. I would find parking and then just walk around downtown, you will be sure to find tons of things to see/do! It was too bad that you missed the Canada Day celebrations, they are truly amazing! If interested, the War Museum is definitely a highlight for history buffs. Enjoy your trip, Ottawa is by far one of my favorite cities!

Add a commentI hope you've scheduled more time for Montréal than Ottawa--Montréal is truly one of the most fascinating cities in North America. The Plateau Mont-Royal has become a hip neighborhood, and aside from chic boutiques and some alternative stores, you can also have Montréal-bagels on the Rue Fairmount--fresh out of wood-burning ovens...
The Marché Jean-Talon is one of North America's largest remaining farmer's markets--and especially in summer it's a riot of color and freshness. The market is located in the Petite Italie area, a bit removed from more visited central Montréal--but you can have an espresso in a neighborhood café with older men watching a soccer match, being served by a Mama, all speaking in Italian...
The downtown corridor, with its miles of underground shopping centers can be a refuge on a rainy day...and for a good chunk of the summer you have the Montréal Jazz festival AND the 'juste pour rire' comedy festival--never a dull moment..
.In the middle of the city is the green oasis of Mont Royal park--whether you want a strenuous day-hike, or just a shaded stroll with a panorama over the city and the St. Lawrence River, it's perfect.
If you've never been to Québec City before, you can do it as a day-trip from Montréal--it really deserves several days, at least, on its own, but if you don't have time, spend at least a day--it's about a three hour NE from Montréal...
