going to Sonoma Valley in California for a week or so to visit family. We have talked about taking a day trip somewhere relatively close, possibly Lake Tahoe. anyone have any suggestions for places to see/go in Sonoma or near there?? ... pretty much open to anything.

Lake Tahoe is a pretty hefty drive from Sonoma and more than a day trip. You could try Sebastapol/Gurneville/Jenner or head over to Point Reyes National Seashore and Tomales Bay. Both are pretty drives once off the main highways.

I agree with Kelly's suggestions. Her first idea is a nice drive along the Russian River that ends up on the coast. There's a good restaurant called there Land's End where you can eat looking out at the ocean. (It's where my wife and I ate the night we got engaged.) Not fancy. You could also head up to Mendocino, which is a cute little town right on the coast. You can hike in Van Damme State Park, which is close by.

Tahoe's great, but there's so much to do where you are, I don't know if it's worth the drive.

Ditto Kelly & Jeremy. If you're in the area on a Sunday check out the farmer's market in Sebastopol.  There are some small wineries in/around Sebastopol worth visiting and a wonderful bakery called Wild Flour Bread at 140 Bohemian Hwy in Freestone, right next to Freestone Winery. Don't forget Occidental (minutes away from Sebastopol) and Bodega Bay, too. Point Reyes and Bolinas are also two scenic places. Enjoy!

If you are here in Sonoma Valley on Tuesday, there is farmers market in the Plaza which starts at 5:30.  There are wineries you can visit like Jacuzzi, Cline, Sebastiani, etc.  Pt. Reyes is a suggestion if you like to eat oysters.  It takes about three and a half hour to go to Lake Tahoe or Reno.  Please visit our Visitors Center which is located in the Plaza.
