Hi Susan,
I stayed at this place a number of years ago and really enjoyed its proximity to Volcan Arenal (I saw it erupting at night!) http://www.montanadefuego.com/. They can arrange hiking and horseback riding excursions.
Also just came across this place doing research, which is in a similar location but looks a bit nicer: http://www.arenalnayara.com/. Not sure about the eco credentials of either, but I think they're worth looking into.
Enjoy your trip!

Add a commentArenal was amazing, my brother and I rented a car and the freedom from having a car was great. We read the drivers in Costa Rica were crazy but I didn't think so. Although I never drove myself. There is an amazing naturalist in the town near Arenal. Can't remember his name but he is a world famous birder. We went out for the afternoon with him and it was the highlight of our trip.He is great at finding animals. Also try to see Vulcan Poas. A little touristy but impressive.
