Can anyone recommend a cheap place to stay near Chichen-Itza, Mexico, so that I can visit the ruins early in the day before the tourist buses arrive from Cancun?

www.doloresalba.com Dolores Alba at Chichen Itza is actually just outside the park and directly across the street from Ik-Kil the cenote. Its a little rustic, but quite charming and inexpensive. I think we paid $32 USD a night. It also has two swimming pools, one of which is a natural spring with a limestone bottom and reputed to have ancient healing powers. There is a restaurant with a limited, but fine menu and gardens with avocados, mangoes, bananas, sour oranges and a myriad of other flowering and fruit bearing plants. Personally I love it there!
If you decide to spend the night, there is a show at the base of the Pyramid every night at Chichen Itza. While the show itself is really just story telling and lights, there is something magical about being at Chichen Itza at night. When you buy your ticket, it includes the park entrance fee, so keep your ticket and you will get a discount to get into the park in the morning.

Add a commentThanks! I actually stayed at Dolores Alba, and I think I was the only guest for the night! I enjoyed it, and it was reasonably priced and very close by. I wish I'd known about the evening show!

It's not super close to Chichen Itza, but Macan Che in Izamal is truly wonderful. I've stayed there twice. You can get a nice bungalow for about $45 USD.
