Question

Photos_page_thumb_ekh_sun

Anyone have any suggestions for cool live music venues in Brooklyn? I'm looking to head out there (for the first time) to stay with friends during Nov-Dec, 2010. I've heard the music scene there has really picked up. Standing-room-only venues are sort of what I'm looking for.

Note: I'm a big fan of The Hundred in the Hands, who are playing at Cocco 66 on September 24. That's the type of show/venue/crowd I'm aiming to find.

One of my best friends from college is a musician in Brooklyn. His name is Dave Smith, but his stage name is Smoota. He plays in several groups of various genres: funk, bhangra, lascivious pop. Some of the places he plays:

Union Pool, Williamsburg, Brooklyn

Southpaw, Brooklyn

Pianos, Lower East Side, Manhattan

Rockwood Music Hall, Lower East Side, Manhattan

Spike Hill is a great Venue...they have all different types of music. Here is a link to the site so you can see who is playing when you are here: http://www.spikehill.com/  I also saw Mates of State play at the Music Hall of Williamsburg a few months ago and the sound was amazing: http://musichallofwilliamsburg.com/

When I visited NY 2 weeks ago I went to this really cool place for live music in Brooklyn: Perch cafe. Check out the events calendar if you're around  - you might catch some nice Guitar concert...

As Moran and Dan suggest, Perch and Bell House are solid choices.

Let me add two more in Park Slope:

Barbes (http://www.barbesbrooklyn.com/) is a local fave -- usually has an eclectic mix of events and music.

Southpaw (http://spsounds.com/) is S.R.O. on nights when the more popular acts are playing... which is fairly often.

And if you can move up your trip to Late October (and have a rich uncle), buy a VIP pass to CMJ and have yourself 5 overwhelming days of musical bliss! ;) (http://cmj2010.com/)

I second Barbes and Bell House. Also, try the Rock Shop and Harefield Road.

Also don't forget places in Williamsburg like the Williamsburg Music Hall, Brooklyn Bowl, Europa, and East River Bar

Best live music venue has to be Brooklyn Bowl, it is unlike anything I have ever seen.  Southpaw in Park Slope is a nice authentically divey spot that has been around for years. I keep hearing about the Bell House, but haven't yet been. Same owners, I believe, as another favorite: Union Hall complete with garden, fireplace,  and bocce ball courts. Rock on.

I guess this is a little late to help Eric, but for anyone else looking for music in Brooklyn...

Don't forget about Celebrate Brooklyn in Prospect Park. A lot of the shows are free & if not, you can drop a blanket outside the bandshell & still enjoy the live music.

Also in Williamsburg, Bembe is great, and intimate.  Mostly African music, but not always.

The Way Station on Washington Ave (on the border of Prospect Heights and Crown Heights) is a very cool steampunk bar with live music
