The Berlin Zoo has been around since 1844. Though outside areas have been added for the animals, the old buildings have also been preserved. The animals roam from the outside enclosures to the old school cages where you can get really close to them. This is the closest I've ever been to a real lion-- about four feet away! He definitely sparked a primitive fear in me. Like many of the animals that day, he was really active. He had just roared before this picture was taken!
