Yuyuan Garden

Government official Pan Yunduan built Yuyuan (Yu Garden) in 1577, but what you see today is the result of extensive repairs made in the mid-20th century, after the garden suffered destruction during several conflicts. Yu Garden is small but perfectly designed, just two hectares (five acres) of tranquil landscaped grounds that include goldfish-filled ponds, rockeries and a number of pavilions. Surrounding the garden is Shanghai’s Old Town, a maze of Ming dynasty–style buildings housing tea, noodle and souvenir shops.
