Sure Chicago and New York may boast about their hot dog carts, but when it comes to hot dogs in Grand Rapids, Yesterdog comes in as top dog, a title it's owned since the 70s.
Located in the Eastown neighborhood of Grand Rapids, Mich., Yesterdog has gained a large following of locals who hit the place up for late night carbs after visiting the bars and tourists who learned about it by word-of-mouth. It remains a ticket stop for those who love the movie American Pie since Yesterdog is the inspiration point for the restaurant "Dog Years" in the movie (American Pie is actually based on the writer's life growing up in East Grand Rapids which borders the Eastown neighborhood).
Although it's a cash-only kind of place, you won't need much green. The most expensive dog will set you back a whole $2.70. The dogs are messy and typically oozing with whatever toppings came on your dog of choice- you've been warned. There's no space for picky customers here so order the one that's closest to your liking and move on down the line. My favorite is the classic and original Yesterdog, a hot dog topped with chili, onion, pickle, ketchup, and mustard. Even though I don't like onion or chili on my dog, when it's a Yesterdog I don't complain.
Newbies, don't go in and ask for a hamburger, or sandwich, or salad. It's hot dogs only people. Follow the rules of the floor and you'll be welcomed- ignore them and you may make your way onto the Wall of Shame.
