In the Taoist Yaowang Miao (temple), dedicated to the god of medicine, a kneeling woman who kept throwing stones on the ground captivated me and I asked about her ritual.
As it turns out, the temple houses a bunch of wooden tablets with different numbers on them. When you're sick and looking for a cure, you pick one of these tablets. You then throw stones on the ground to ask the medicine god if you picked correctly. Once you've found the right number, you match it to one of the laminated notes hanging from the wall. This paper is the prescription that you'll hand your pharmacist, no doctor necessary.
