I absolutely adore spending time in Myanmar and I jump at every chance I can to get myself there. Many of the quirky touches I love often involve some kind of heritage or history.
Possibly out of need and necessity rather than to clutch to the past, many ‘old’ things that would usually be simply disposed of in the West are salvaged and used for other things, maintaining an old-world image and atmosphere.
For example, until recently vintage 1944 Chevrolet buses were used as public transport but were discontinued due to acquisition of a newer bus fleet to serve the city. Not a country that wastes, the buses were immediately reconditioned and refurbished with new teak interiors and big comfy seats using locally sourced materials.
The buses now offer unique private transportation options for hotel transfers and city tours with a difference, and I for one love these vintage vehicles.
