The Yangon Bakehouse simply does everything well. Every morning and afternoon this café serves up the city’s best pastries, pies, salads, sandwiches, smoothies and coffee drinks. Regardless of how long you’ve been overseas, stepping into the Bakehouse is like walking into your favorite eatery in New York, Buenos Aires or London.
More impressive than the edibles, is the Bakehouse’s commitment as a non-profit ‘social enterprise.’ The majority of their employees are women from disadvantaged backgrounds. These women are hired and placed into a twelve-month apprenticeship program. Apprentices are taught cooking, baking, business and leadership skills. They walk away with the tools and the confidence to land jobs and succeed. The model is so successful, that throughout Yangon it’s now a point of pride for businesses to hire Bakehouse graduates.
