Yanagawa Doll Canal Parade
While the canal city of Yanagawa offers many events and displays to celebrate the Doll Festival holiday in early March, none is more visually impressive than the boat parade on the city's waterways. The event, which traditionally takes place on the third Sunday of March, features young girls from the surrounding area dressed up in sumptuous red kimono with golden crowns adorning their dark hair, much like the style of the town's famous Hina "ningyo", or Hina dolls (typical sights for the early spring festival). The boats laden with "princesses" are followed by a boat of Shinto priests, whose somewhat off-key flute music provides the musical soundtrack to the event. The parade begins at 11am sharp in the restored canal district near the Ohana Villa and ends around 12:20pm a short walk from the Yanagawa Nishitetsu train station.
