The ferry trip to Ketchikan from Whittier, Alaska takes about 70 hours, unless the seas are "rough." (!!!!!) So, avoiding 140 hours of overkill ferry time and avoiding Alaskair's über expensive airfares, we flew down from Anchorage on a one way puddle jumper using a companion fare. Then after we stayed on Ketchikan for the Blueberry Festival ( which was really awesome) we took the AK Marine ferry back to Whittier. It is a heck of a cruise! We passed 10 of the highest mountains in the hemisphere, sighted countless whales and orcas, and slept in the solarium on cots, gazing up at the stars. Totally recommend it! The entertainment was the Jackie Robinson movie and lots of locals with interesting stories. And the coolest tourist ever!!! Found out after we returned that a Princess Cruise would have cost the same, but probably wouldn't have thrilled the same.
