The Most Beautiful Vineyard in Hamptons' South Fork
Juniper berries serve as entrance bushes, and the baroque-like fountain splashes merrily. Built on a potato farm and reminiscent of the landscape of Tuscany, the 55 acre Wölffer estate houses both stables and vineyards that are elegant and natty.
Christian Wölffer, the legendary vinter who worked tirelessly to bring the art and craft of European-style wines to the area, started Wölffer as a way to preserve the European wine tradition in South Fork. Currently the estate--easily the prettiest in South Fork ---is famous for its jammy, not too sweet wines which include cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, pinot gris, merlot and cuvée sparkling brut.
The wine tasting can be done indoors where you can easily chat with the wine masters, or on the spacious patio ideal for people watching. Tastings start from $12 and you can choose from the standard menu to a pure dessert wine menu if you veer toward the sweet tooth.
The artisanal cheese plate and fresh bread at Wölffer is distinctive: the aged Sheep’s Milk cheese called Dante is by far the best I’ve had in a while. Creamy but not salty, Dante is what grabs my attention because it pairs with many Wölffer wines perfectly. It makes me realize that these wine masters truly know their pairing.
Tip: If you love Chardonnay, try the “Perle” 2010. It has the fruitiness that Napa is well known for, but also complements most dishes nicely. The estate is best known for its 2011 rose, which is poured in several Hamptons parties.
