When I think of apple pie, I think of Bob Dylan, middle America, red and white checkered table cloth and long summer days. Who would have thought the best apple pie and the one I dream about is from Winkel in Amsterdam.
The Dutch version of an apple pie is akin to the deep-dish Chicago style pizza than the latticed crusted version of apple pie you may know. The apple pie at Winkel is at least 3 inches tall with a buttery crumb crust (think cheesecake), crumble top (think fruit crumble) and served with fresh whipped cream. On a beautiful day, you can sit outside on the terrace, order a beer or coffee and do some serious people watching while you inhale the delicious apple pie (my was gone in no time)!
The pie looks really big and you might not think you can eat it all by yourself, you might be temped to share. Don’t be silly. Sharing this pie will only lead to regrets or a second order. Order one for yourself. You don’t know when you will be in this part of the world again.
