There are several good reasons to make a special trip to this winery, not least that its sauvignon, pinot noir and shiraz regularly win major awards. But the most obvious reason to visit hits you as soon as you walk through the restaurant and onto the sunbaked lawn, with its extraordinary view out over the beautiful valley of Franschoek. We took the 11am tour with the vineyard's owner, John, who was wonderful company as he narrated the story of the farm (which burned down in 1984) and his relationship with the vines. He's a great romantic about winemaking, and his passion is infectious. And after the tour, you can settle down on that lawn and sip a glass and thank the lucky stars that brought you here.
