We were driving towards Chocorua trail head on the southern edge of the White Mountains, when I made a last ditch effort for a change in plans. I am always game for an adventure, but on this humid summer day, I was not enthused about a summit hike. Determined to find a less strenuous trail to satisfy my nature craving, I scoured the maps and found Flat Mountain Pond Trail. The name itself sounded right up my alley on this lazy summer day. The next challenge was proving to my fiance that one can actually enjoy a hike without panting and sweating to the tippy-top. It wasn't easy. You won't have the "far-as-the-eye-can-see" vistas or the "I'm-the-king-of-the-world" moment. So, where's the bravado in hiking a Flat Mountain? He wasn't going for it. We came to a crossroads (literally.) To the left, Flat Mountain Pond and to the right Chocorua Mountain. We got out of the car a flipped a coin - the only mature way to settle a dispute. Needlesstosay, I won the toss and we both loved every minute of this relaxing hike through the serene woods of New Hampshire. We strolled, hiked, laughed and ambled all the way to camp. There was no time restraints, no stop-to-catch-your-breath breaks, no "are we there yet?"moments - just a ton of fun in a gorgeous setting. We slept under the stars at the water's edge and had a peaceful and restful night. So, everyone take note: adventures don't need to be extreme, they just have to be unique. Happy trails!
