In south-central New Mexico, just outside of Alamogordo, lies the made-for-Instagram White Sands National Monument: 275 square miles of wave-like gypsum sand dunes dotted with striking yucca and cholla plants. It's the kind of spectacular setting that inspires artists and, in fact, White Sands National Monument has been featured in films and music videos. Drive the scenic 17-mile loop road, camp overnight on the dunes, and go on a guided sunset stroll. Each evening, a park ranger leads visitors on an easy walk (less than a mile) through the dunes while discussing the monuments’ geology, vegetation, and wildlife.
