Waterfront Settlements

As you travel along the Valeria River, you'll see remote settlements that are even smaller than Boca da Valeria, with just a few houses each. In addition to more populous cities, such as Belém and Manaus, thousands of waterfront settlements dot the banks of the Amazon River and its smaller tributaries. These rivers have long served as the road system of the region, a way for residents to get around every day as they fish, hunt and trade. A visit to one of the small communities in the area provides a glimpse into a way of life that has persisted even as the outside world has encroached on the Amazon over the centuries.
