When you think of Philadelphia, does the word ‘green’ come to mind? Unless it’s tied to our beloved football team, probably not. But a number of projects along the Delaware River (Race Street Pier, Spruce Street Harbor Park among others) are slowly turning the city’s waterfront a little greener. Of all of them, the newly designed park at Washington Avenue is perhaps the best spot to catch the sunrise. Spanning no more than an acre, panoramic views of the Delaware River, a short boardwalk, and lush plantings throughout make the space feel much larger. If you’re feeling energetic, set your morning jog course through the pier and the waterfront trail. It may not seem like it, but you'll also be visiting one of the city's most historic sites--a spiral “land buoy” at the park’s edge honors the site’s history as a once-thriving immigration station.
