A nighttime hike through Volcanoes National Park yields an up close and personal experience with lava right from Kilauea. Start at West Kaili ili entry, adjacent Chain of Craters road. We highly recommend wearing sturdy, closed-toe shoes. Use your headlamp as a backup and use large handheld floodlights to illuminate your path more clearly. The steadily increasing heat over 4 miles is worth it ... stunning views of flowing lava, lava rock, and volcanic ash abound. Bring a minimum of 3L of cold water, notify someone of your whereabouts, and ensure you're hydrated the day before the hike out there. Watch your step!
