Located about 5 miles northwest of downtown, Mount Bonnell is supposedly (though maybe not) the highest point in Austin and offers views of the river, the city skyline in the distance, and the massive homes across the river. We went in the morning, freshly caffeinated and not yet that hot out. It's advertised as having a "long, long staircase" to get to the top, but it's only the equivalent of roughly 5 flights of stairs. The car actually does most of the hill climbing for you before you get to the base of the stairs. It might not be enough to burn off those barbecue calories, but it was a nice short detour away from the heart of the city, with fresh air and good views.
