While Pompeii is a beautiful sight in the rainy spring, Mt. Vesuvius has, well, restricted sites. Due to limited visibility- note: zero visibility- we couldn't make the hike up the ominous trail to see the panoramic view from the mouth of the beast, but the serpentine road up was challenging and very exciting, especially covered in fog. There are huge statues scattered along the road, such as this sideways skull. We stopped at a truck stop on the way to the volcano and loaded up on salami, olives, crackers, and Peroni so our rental car picnic was delightful.
